A model classified the main reason in 5,451 one- and two-star Google reviews of 270 high-review-count pest control companies in eight U.S. metros

TAMPA, FL, UNITED STATES, October 6, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- A new study of 5,455 written one- and two-star Google reviews of 270 high-review-count pest control companies finds that how the company is run was the model-classified main reason in 76.7 percent of the 5,451 reviews the main-reason pass labelled. The model classified the pest treatment itself as the main reason in 21.8 percent of the labelled reviews, and 1.5 percent were unclear.

The study was published by Sales Roadmap (salesroadmaps.com) and conducted by Kamyar Shah, a fractional CMO and founder of World Consulting Group. It covers pest control companies in Phoenix, Dallas, Atlanta, Charlotte, Columbus, Denver, Tampa and Kansas City. The reviews are the written one- and two-star reviews of at least five words among the up-to-60 lowest-rated reviews retrieved per business, with review dates from 2009-09-23 to 2026-09-30.

The treatment is in the reviews too. The model assigned at least one core-service label, covering the treatment and the service visit, to 52.8 percent of the 5,455 reviews. A review can carry both kinds of label, so the study reports the main-reason result and the label shares separately.

Communication failure was the most common theme. The model assigned the communication failure label to 40.6 percent of the 5,455 reviews, service quality to 36.0 percent, billing and pricing to 30.9 percent and treatment effectiveness to 30.9 percent. These are themes a model assigned to what reviewers wrote, not verified events, and the shares overlap.

Sales contact and cancellations appear as separate themes. The model assigned the sales conduct label, which covers sales contact at the door or by phone, to 23.6 percent of the 5,455 reviews, and the contract and cancellation label to 22.0 percent. The study did not measure how many of these reviewers were customers of the company they reviewed, and it did not read any contract.

One reviewer wrote: "When I tried calling their office as an existing customer, no one would pick up." Another wrote that "the company charged me $181 to end the contract".

"A pest control owner can read these reviews as a list of moments to check in their own records," said Kamyar Shah. "The callback, the price change and the cancellation request are all named in them."

The number that keeps this honest. The 303 pest control companies sampled hold 342,511 lifetime Google reviews between them. Of those, 13,118, or 3.8 percent, are one or two stars, and 93.0 percent are five stars. Of the 303, 270 have at least one review in the corpus. The study describes what the one- and two-star reviews say. None of its figures is a share of customers.

How the study was done. Reviews were retrieved through the DataForSEO business data API. In each metro, up to 200 listings were screened and, after filters including a cap of two locations per brand, the 40 businesses with the most Google reviews were sampled. Seventeen businesses were excluded after their names were read, 15 wildlife-removal-only companies and 2 retail stores selling do-it-yourself products. Even so, 3.2 percent of the 5,455 reviews, 177 in total, match a keyword pattern for wildlife or trapping vocabulary. A language model, Claude Haiku 4.5, classified the main reason, and a second model, Claude Sonnet 4.5, classified 200 of the same reviews. On the binary question of how the business is run against every other main reason, the two agreed on 93.5 percent, with a Cohen's kappa of 0.845. No sample was checked against human coding. The study did not check any bill, contract or treatment.

"The study counts what reviewers wrote and how a model labelled it," Shah said. "It does not judge whether any company or any reviewer was right."
