SMOKY LAKE, ALBERTA, CANADA, October 6, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Métis Crossing will host Where Have All the Buffalo Gone?, an Axis Theatre production written by Métis playwright Tai Amy Grauman, on October 10, 2026. The play traces a Métis love story across seven generations, from the height of the Métis Nations' presence on the plains through the disappearance of the buffalo and into the present day.

The play follows Tai’s lineage, the Callihoo family across generations. The story centers the Callihoo women whose stories Grauman says are largely absent from the historical record. The same character reappears in each era, a structure Grauman uses to connect the family's past directly to its present.

"My work feels strongest when it's with the people," said Grauman. "By going to Métis Crossing, and literally going to the bison, we are with the people, which is where I want my work to exist. We often think about stories in theatre as something outside of ourselves, but this show isn't. It's very present in our everyday lives as Métis people in Alberta."

Since 2021, Métis Crossing has worked with Elk Island National Park and rancher Len Hrehorets to build a bison herd on-site. Its Visions, Hopes and Dreams Wildlife Park is now home to Wood bison, Plains bison, and a rare herd of white buffalo, grazing a short walk from where the play's audience will sit.

"The bison disappeared from this land once, and we brought them home," said Juanita Marois, CEO, Métis Crossing. "This play puts words to something our guests can already feel standing in that wildlife park. Hosting a story about that disappearance, on the same ground where the herd now grazes, is exactly the kind of connection between past and present we built Métis Crossing to hold."

Where Have All the Buffalo Gone? runs October 10 from 5 to 10 p.m. Tickets are available for the performance alone or paired with dinner at Métis Crossing.

Admission is $45 per person, or $100 with dinner included.
